Lawrence Cassidy, the Salford historian who has collected and saved over 70 Salford street signs from demolition sites and others kindly donated to him has today started the long process of having then all digitally photographed and recorded by Past Pixels who specialise in documenting items of social history.
The signs have been exhibited throughout galleries, schools and museums throughout Greater Manchester to great acclaim giving a wonderful snapshot of forgotten and lost streets of Salford.
At present they are stored in Lawrence's home and he has decided it was about time they should be recorded and hopefully they will gain a permanent exhibition space in Salford, his fear is if they are given to a Museum they will be put into storage and never seen again.
Amongst the signs are, Isaac Street, Ordsall where the writer and broadcaster, Alistair Cooke lived My Street, one of the shortest named street in Salford along with Jo Street, Lord Street, Tatton Street, Ellor Street and many more.
It is interesting to see that most of the street signs have the numerical district number of the area of Salford they were in, 3, 5, 6, 7, but for some reason there was no area in Salford with the numbers 1, 2, or 4, Lawrence admits he has no idea but would be very interested in knowing why as would I.
There are no further plans to exhibit the street signs at present but it is good to know that they have documented and photographed for posterity.
