Salford’s Super Gran Linda Ryan age 71 is deep in training to swim 400 lengths at Broughton Swimming Pool for children’s charity Brainwave next month.

Linda has always loved swimming from a young age and at 4 foot 10.5 inches recalls how she taught her grandson Thomas to swim when he was a youngster and how he is now towering over her at around 6 feet.  At the age of 17 Thomas is now not only a proficient swimmer thanks to Linda but a boxer which Linda takes no credit for.

    Linda says:

“I grew up in Burnley and remember with fondness achieving my lifesaving certificates before the age of 15. My dad worked at the colliery and loved to swim too, so we’d all be in the pool as much as we could, I’m sure he’d love to have done this challenge with me.  Brainwave is a fantastic charity that I’ve been supporting as a volunteer for several years so now I’m delighted to take part in this challenge and raise as much money as I can for their 40th anniversary challenge.”

Linda will be alternating her strokes between breaststroke and back stroke as she suffers from lower back pain and sore joints so has found alternating will help make it easier for her to achieve this goal.  For anyone wishing to support Linda on her swim please donate on the following link and wish her luck!  https://www.justgiving.com/brainwave

Keith Sinclair, CEO at Brainwave said:

“We’re all so impressed with Linda’s challenge and wish her all the best with this fantastic swimming effort.  This year is very special to us as it marks our 40th year helping children across the UK to achieve their potential.  We’re hoping by the end of the year to raise £40,000 to fund a full-time speech and language therapist to join our team.”

Brainwave supports children with various conditions including cerebral palsy, autism, developmental delay, Sensory Processing difficulties and Down’s syndrome. The Charity also supports children with no official diagnosis and can assist families in accessing their services through a means-tested Fund.
