Over the past few weeks, water sports activity at the Salford water sports centre has been suspended due to a suspected Avian (Bird) Flu outbreak at Salford Quays.
Salford Council confirmed on Friday that the virus had presented in a number of dead birds found around the area. Therefore, the centre has suspended swimming and water sports activities until further notice.
The centre says that it is hopeful that this outbreak is brief and that the area is deemed safe to use in the near future, but in the meantime, If you live on the Quays or are visiting the Quays, please follow the below advice to try and reduce the spread:
Keep to the footpath – avoid the slipways & pontoons
Keep dogs on leads
Do not feed wild waterfowl (Bird Wildlife)
Do not pick up or touch dead or sick wild birds
Do not touch wild bird feathers or surfaces contaminated with wild bird droppings
Additionally, if you keep poultry or other birds in Salford, such as on allotments etc.. the council is advising you to wash your hands and clean and disinfect your footwear before tending to them.
Please report dead wild waterfowl (swans, geese, or ducks) or other dead wild birds, such as gulls or birds of prey to Defra’s GB helpline: 03459 335577
The water sports centre is working closely with Salford City Council on this matter, and say that they will provide an update as soon as they can.
If you are a swimmer – you can join their Open Water Facebook group to stay up to date or email them if you have any questions.
Staff are still working at the centre and dealing with enquiries for 2023, so please email them via watersportscentre@scll.co.uk if you would like to make a booking.
