The big hearted crews asked householders to donate gifts for local children who might otherwise miss out on Christmas – and were blown away by the amazing response.

Over five thousand presents – from selection boxes, toys, teddies and toiletries to games, books and clothes for all ages were donated and it is estimated they have a value of over £25,000.

Salford City Council staff sorted the toys into age categories and filled more than 125 large bags with gifts which were then shared directly with families being supported by social and support workers and local charities.

Unison convener Sam Barry, who came up with the idea, said he was delighted and humbled by people’s generous response.

    Quote

“Salford people are known for their kindness and they have done their city proud with their response to our appeal,” he said.

“I couldn’t bear the thought of children waking up on Christmas Day and not having a present to open and thanks to the people of Salford that’s not going to happen.”

    City Mayor Paul Dennett added:

    Quote

“I walked into the Civic Centre and it was like walking into Santa’s toy factory – there were gifts and bags and volunteers everywhere busy sorting them out ready for delivery.

“It has been truly fabulous and I can’t thank everyone involved enough for their kindness. This shows the true spirit of Salford and makes me very, very proud of our wonderful city.”
