Plans to expand Springwood Primary School have moved forwards.

Today the City Mayor made a decision to move plans forward and increase the capacity by 60 places to meet the need for Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) support in the city. A statutory consultation will now open on Monday 19 April.

The school in Swinton provides specialist education for children with complex needs from across the city.

Pupils who attend the school are from across the whole city and aged from 2 to 11 years old.

The children have profound, complex or challenging needs including multiple learning difficulties, severe learning difficulties, communication and interaction needs, autism, and hearing and visual impairments.

The decision made by City Mayor Paul Dennett (Tuesday 23 March) means the school can move on with plans to expand at a second site at Craig Hall, Preston Avenue in Irlam.

Salford City Mayor Paul Dennett said:

“This is great news and will provide much needed capacity for children with SEND in the city.

“The approval is for the consultation to begin at an extra site at Craig Hall as there are restrictions at the current site. When fully complete the school’s overall capacity will increase to 300 pupils.

“This is desperately needed and will be welcomed greatly by parents and their children.”
