STARTER FOR SUCCESS FOR THREE YOUNG SALFORDIANS THANKS TO COUNCIL SCHEME

Three young Salford residents who love to cook are being offered a chance to Kickstart their career in catering.

Salford City Council is looking for an assistant chef to join its Citywide catering service which provides everything from daily school meals to wedding banquets and afternoon teas while local charity Basic, which helps people with brain or spinal injuries  is searching for two catering assistants for its Food for Thought cafe.

The young trainees, who must be under 24 and claiming Universal Credit, will learn all aspects of running a commercial catering service, putting them in a strong position to snap up future jobs.

The posts are part of the government funded Kickstart scheme which covers the cost of an organisation taking on and training a young person at risk of long-term unemployment.

Salford City Council, which is administering the scheme has already placed 30 young people with the council and local employers in areas from youth work, project management and horticulture to engineering, nursery work and finance and has more opportunities coming through all the time.

Councillor Jim Cammell, lead member for children’s and young people’s services, said:

“Young people may have enjoyed cooking for their families during lockdown but not thought of developing a career from it.

“The Kickstart scheme gives them six months to try working in catering and gain new skills and confidence which will stand them in good stead in any role.”

 

An online information session about the posts is being held next Wednesday 26 May and anyone interested should register by emailing kickstart@salford.gov.uk before 5pm on Tuesday 25 May.
