The much loved Greater Manchester Archaeology Day returns to Peel Hall at Salford Uni Campus on Saturday the 30th of November (2019) and this years Brian Grimsditch Memorial Lecture will be given by Dr Mike Heyworth who holds the position of executive director of the council for British Archaeology.
Brian was a well known figure across Greater Manchester having overseen many a dig and discovery, some of which our predecessors SalfordOnline and Historian Tony Flynn had the opportunity to cover.
Sadly Brian passed away aged just 61-years-old in 2015. His memory lives on in what has become an annual history lecture at the event each year.
This years event falls on the 30th of November 2019 and the day will see many talks from centre staff as well as stalls detailing their most recent fieldwork spanning the previous twelve months.
There will also be stalls selling archaeology and history books as well as refreshments available in the form of teas, coffees and biscuits.
Some of the most prominent excavations across Greater Manchester will also be highlighted by leading experts in their field.
The inspiration for both the Federation and the Archaeology Day can be traced back to the establishment of the Greater Manchester Archaeology Group, in 1979. This was the forerunner of the first version of the Greater Manchester Archaeology Federation, which was established in 1984.
The Group, along with the newly established Greater Manchester Archaeology Unit (in 1980), ran a Greater Manchester Archaeology Day in 1981 and throughout the 1980's.
So they are running into a series of celebrations with 2020 marking the 40th anniversary of professional archaeology within Greater Manchester, and 2021 marking the 40th anniversary of the Greater Manchester Archaeology day, at least as a concept.
Many things have changed in those four decades and GMAD 2020 will be looking to capture some of those developments.
Tickets for the day are priced at just £10 each and are available from the link below.
