Just after 8am this morning (Saturday 6 July 2019), police responded to an incident at Irlam News and Wine shop on Liverpool Road, Irlam.

Two men had reportedly tried to leave the shop without paying for four large bottles of beer from the shop’s fridge.

When asked to pay for their items, one of the men pulled a knife out and made threats to the shop worker with it.

Both offenders quickly made their escape from the shop but within 30 minutes they had been detained by the police.

The men, aged 18 and 24, remain in custody on suspicion of robbery.

Detective Chief Inspector Chris Packer of GMP’s Salford District, said:

“Weapons have never and will never be welcome on our streets and neither will those who think it is acceptable to carry them.

“By carrying a knife, they are not only putting themselves at risk but innocent members of the public who have families to go home to.

“We have two people in custody but our investigation is very much continuing so you may see local officers in the area, carrying out their enquiries and gathering witness accounts.

“If you know someone who carries a knife, please tell us. Preventing violent crime is so important but we can only do so with your help.”

This follows after an incident at the shop late last month in which a cash machine was stolen.

Anyone with information should contact police on 0161 856 1319 quoting reference number 700 of 05/07/19 or the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
