Greggs have announced the closure of the Walkden branch of its popular bakery which will no doubt come as sad news to some in the area.

The store which operates out of Unit 76 in the Elllesmere Shopping Centre closed its shutters for good earlier in the month.

There was a branch across the border in neighbouring Farnworth but that closed in 2019.

This now means that the closest branch is now located in Swinton.

The Bakers saw their first loses in over 36 years in 2020 due to the Covid crisis and does not expect to return to profit until around 2022 at the earliest.

In the last year alone the company have had to make 820 job cuts due to the impact and pressures of lockdown.

    Chief executive Roger Whiteside said:

    Quote

"The impact of the Covid-19 crisis had been "enormous" and that a fresh lockdown meant "significant uncertainties remain in the near term".

The salford.media team have entered a period of mourning and have asked for their privacy to be respected at this sad time.
