Alan Devine (05/06/1943) of Worthing Close, Stockport has today, Friday 22 June 2018 been sentenced to 2 years in prison for a catalogue of non-recent sexual offences against children.
The court heard how Devine was working as a priest at a school in the 1970s when he began a relationship with an 11-year-old girl.
Devine would take her swimming and sexually assault the then teenager a number of times.
In June 2016, the now adult woman disclosed to police that she had been sexually assaulted by Devine when she was younger and an investigation was launched.
During this investigation, officers discovered another victim who had also been sexually assaulted by Devine.
On 8 June 2016 Devine was arrested and, despite denying the offences against him, was found guilty of six counts of sexual assault at Manchester Minshull Street Crown Court.
Detective Inspector Gina Brennand of GMP’s Stockport Public Protection Unit, said:
Quote“Devine’s depravity knew no bounds, shown by the way he assaulted two young girls while working in a position of trust.
“This was a complete abuse of his position and I cannot imagine the suffering they went through at his hands.
“Both victims have shown immense strength in reporting this to police and I hope knowing Devine will now spend the next 2 years behind bars, brings them some comfort.
“I think today’s result shows that no matter how long it’s been since a crime has happened, we will do everything we can to bring the perpetrators to justice.”
