Metro Mayor Andy Burnham is set to press ahead with his plans for an integrated transport system 'Bee Network' across Greater Manchester after being awarded a £94.8m boost from the governments Bus Service Improvement Plan which is worth over £1BN.
Greater Manchester has already been awarded £1.07bn from the City Region Sustainable Transport Settlement for Greater Manchester.
Burnham hopes to be able to use the additional funding as part of the regions plans to improve existing bus services, reduce prices to customers and better evening and weekend services.
As part of the allocated funding, Metrolink will be receive £20.5m in order to ensure that trams continue to run despite a decline in passenger numbers due to the effect of the pandemic.
Transport secretary Grant Shapps said:
Quote“Buses are the most popular way of getting around in this country – but for too long people outside of London have had a raw deal. The investment we’re making today to ramp up the bus revolution will drive down fares at a time when people’s finances are tight and help connect communities across England.”
