The Pentagon has confirmed that it carried out an airstrike at the instruction of President Trump in retaliation for an Iranian led attack on the US embassy in Baghdad earlier this week.

Qassem Soleimani, the head of Iran's Quds Force, was killed in a precision strike on a vehicle he was travelling in on Friday at Baghdad International Airport.

Four precision guided missiles fired from a U.S. drone obliterated two black Hyundai vehicles in which Soleiman and his entourage were travelling in as they made their way down an access road close to Baghdad Airport.

The U.S. Defence Department said that strike was justified to protect American lives.

Iranian officials have condemned the attack which they describe as an act of terrorism and issued a statement warning of imminent retaliation from Tehran.

Meanwhile Top Democrats in the U.S. have warned that the airstrike unsanctioned by Congress had the potential to trigger a larger conflict within the powder keg of the middle east.

In a statement former Vice President Joe Biden said that Trump had just tossed a stick of dynamite into a tinderbox.

With tensions already high in the middle east this latest move by the President Trump has the potential to trigger a war between the two countries.

This action will be viewed by Iran as a huge military provocation which will no doubt result in a retaliation of their own against U.S. assets and personnel.
