Heavy rains are forecast for Salford and the Greater Manchester region over the weekend as a weather system which has already had an impact on France moves in from the south.

Storm Alex, a weather system named by Meteo-France earlier this week, will be moving across the country and bringing the risk of localised flooding in its wake.

Salford is expected to be affected by the storm from around 3am on Saturday 3rd October until around 6pm on Sunday 4th October.

    Saturday

A wet start with persistent rain, heavy at times, continuing into the evening. Fairly windy, particularly over high ground and exposed areas with Rain clearing overnight, some clear spells behind. Maximum temperature 14 °C.

    Outlook for Sunday

A clear, dry start to Sunday, followed by afternoon showers and potential rumbles of thunder. Remaining unsettled for the period.

The Met Office's Deputy Chief Meteorologist, Nick Silkstone, said:

“Saturday will be a very wet day as heavy bands of rain push north and west across the country, followed by showery rain on Sunday.

"It’ll be cold and windy too with a risk of coastal gales in some areas. The Met Office has issued a rain warning covering large parts of the country over the weekend and we’re urging people to keep a close eye on the weather forecast and warnings during this spell of disruptive weather.”

There could be a flood risk in some of the more exposed and lower lying areas but Salford is blessed to have a fairly strong flood defence capability in the more prone areas which can be brought into play if needed so we should be safe.

Motorists are being warned to take things slow as rain water on the road surfaces will no doubt reduce grip which gives the potential for accidents, common sense says to reduce speed and save lives.

As always though it pays to remain vigilant, so we will be monitoring river levels over the next few days.
